From Steam Engines to New Paradigms: A 60-Year Cycle of Unstoppable Energy

For millennia, the horse was humanity’s primary means of transportation. It was the engine of agriculture, the speed of communication, and the unstoppable force in warfare. It is no coincidence that even today, in an age of rockets and electric vehicles, we still measure the raw output of our most powerful engines in “horsepower.” We acknowledge that the spirit of the horse is synonymous with strength and usable energy.

In Western Astrology, we assign the horse to Sagittarius, the Centaur – a hybrid of human and horse. Sagittarius is a mutable, as in moving, fire sign, an archetype associated with spreading wisdom, igniting, inspiring, and teaching the truth.

Chinese stargazers also understood the connection between time and energy. They wove a tapestry of 12 animal signs by combining Jupiter’s 11.86-year orbit with the Ganzhi cycle of the Five Elements.

Every year is an alchemical formula: Animal + Element. While the Horse gallops through the zodiac every dozen years, only once every 60 years does this engine of civilization ignite with Yang Fire. This is the equine spirit we ride in 2026. In other words, 2026 is blessed or cursed (that might depend on how we ride the horse) with double fire energy. The horse is fire, and once in 60 years, his mane ablaze by the extra Yang energy, he enflames all he comes in contact with.

The 1786 Pivot: A Legacy of Revolution

In Chinese lore, a Fire Horse (Bing-Wu) is unstoppable: brilliant, rebellious, and occasionally untamable. Whole dynasties supposedly timed treaties around his arrival, fearing those born under this sign would burn conventions and outshine their fathers. As I mentioned in my Astrology of 2026 book, this year is a world-order-changing year.

History confirms that Fire Horse years are pivotal moments where humanity shifts gears, trading one form of power for another.

Consider the Fire Horse year of 1786. This was the year the Albion Mills went into operation in London – the first major factory in the world powered entirely by James Watt’s rotary steam engines. In that moment, humanity began the massive transition from relying on biological muscle to relying on mechanical “fire horses.” 1786 ignited the engines of the Industrial Revolution, forever changing how our species generates and uses power. Interesting to note that in 1786, Pluto was in Aquarius, the sign of technology and innovation, as he is now and for the next 20 years. We can expect another such leap in technology as Pluto once again rides the Fire Horse. We could witness a revolution in energy. Whether it is AI, fusion, or a new paradigm we cannot yet see, we are about to trade our current engines for something faster, hotter, and more intense. Hopefully less polluting. Side note: One of the biggest issues in the late 19th century was horse manure covering the streets of metropolitan areas. The “Great Horse Manure Crisis of 1894” was an urban crisis in cities like NY and London, where over 100,000 horses produced massive amounts of waste. The crisis caused severe public health issues, including typhus, fly infestations, and unbearable stench.

The Gloriously Explosive Element of Fire

Fire has always been a paradox: it can devour cities, yet it also heals, warms, and made humanity’s evolution possible. Cooking, fire’s earliest gift, freed energy for our brains, transforming Homo Erectus into Homo Sapiens.

In 2026, we are tasked with saddling this mechanical stallion of fire. Past cycles show the journey is rarely calm:

  • 1666: The Great Fire nearly consumed London, clearing the way for a modern city.
  • 1906: San Francisco endured its inferno and earthquake, forcing a reshaping of urban planning.
  • 1966: The world saw cultural explosions, from the Cultural Revolution in China to the “Summer of Psychedelia” in the West.

Taming the Wildling: Practical Magic for 2026

According to I-Ching philosophy, in 2026 we have two Horses converge (the year + the zodiac sign), creating a competitive dynamic named “ZiXing” (Self-Penalty). This high-octane energy can fuel aggressive goals, but it can also cause internal tension or self-sabotage. I asked my friend and colleague Letao Wang (check out his Tarot cards and website) to share some of his suggestions for the Year of the Horse. To harmonize the double fire, we should work with the colors of Yellow and Green, and plants like Calla Lily and Jasmine. But more importantly, we must balance the internal heat:

  • Candle-Gazing: On New Year’s Eve, gaze at a candle flame to visualize light dissolving mental clutter.
  • Forest Bathing: Embrace Yin Water (mist/rain) and Yang Earth (mountains/trees) to cool the fire.
  • The Lucky Hour: Schedule important meetings between 11:00 and 13:00, when the Sun is at its zenith.

Solar Eclipse in Aquarius

The Chinese New Year always falls on the New Moon in Aquarius. It is the New Moon that is roughly located between the solstice and equinox, the sacred corners of the zodiac edifice. Aquarius is the sign of manifesting wishes since it is also the sign of the future. The Water Bearer, Aquarius, is the sign of community, altruism, saints, and humanity. 2026, which we already established is an intense year, is further intensified by the fact that the Chinese New Year also falls on a Solar Eclipse – a New Moon on steroids. I will be leading a webinar on the eclipse on Feb 17 (6:30pm PST), with a recording, to activate this powerful and auspicious lunation. Feb 17 offers a grand opportunity to revamp your New Year’s Resolutions as you can ride the wave of “new beginnings” created by the hundreds of millions who will greet each other “Xin Nian Kuai Le” as in Happy NEW Year.

The Eclipse and Year of the Horse for the Signs

When the New Moon in Aquarius arrives to ring in the Lunar Year, it activates a specific sector for every zodiac sign. Here is where the Fire Horse’s intense “horsepower” will drive you in 2026. Check your Sun and Rising sign to get teh full picture.

Aries

For your tribe, riding the fire horse is easy. Being the cowboy of the zodiac, the eclipse ignites your sector of social networks and future wishes, demanding that you step out of independent mode and into the collective. You need to find your gang, your troupe, a “herd” that matches your speed and intensity.

This is the year to leverage technology and digital platforms to broadcast your message. Collaborations that seemed impossible in the past will now find a natural rhythm, provided you are willing to share the reins. It is a time to be active (physically, emotionally, and intellectually) with friends and colleagues.

Taurus

The horse gallops into the area of your chart relating to your public standing and professional legacy. The Fire Horse does not do things halfway, and neither should you when it comes to your career. You are being asked to take bold, calculated risks to redefine your status. Whether it is a sudden promotion, a pivot to a new industry, or the launch of a business, the energy supports high visibility. You cannot hide; you are blazing forward. Hesitation now could mean missing a 60-year window of opportunity. But ensure your ambition doesn’t burn bridges. Any impurities or lack of integrity will be exposed. Unleash your power!

Gemini

Your mental horizons are expanding at breakneck speed. The Aquarius activation in your sector of foreign lands and higher mind suggests that the familiar will no longer satisfy you. You are riding the horse to distant lands! If you cannot travel, you will need to take journeys of the mind via publishing, teaching, or studying. You are hungry for truth, and this year provides the “sparks” of insight that can turn a simple idea into a global conversation.

This is also a period of breaking dogmas. You may find yourself rebelling against belief systems you previously accepted without question. Broadcast, write, speak, and publish your unique perspective.

Cancer

You are entering the alchemical heart of the fire. The New Moon asks you to descend into the Underworld, the shadow, where your gifts and hidden treasures lie. Intimacy, passion, sexuality, the occult, research, and investigation are your focus this year. You can be a wizard who helps people tap into their full artistic and financial potential. You are a shaman riding a blazing stallion into the unknown.

You may find yourself dealing with inheritances, investments, or emotional debts that need to be cleared. The Fire Horse gives you the courage to face the “dark” and transmute it into power. Relationships will demand total honesty and vulnerability. If you have been holding back out of fear, the Fire Horse will push you to break those barriers. It is time to let go and say goodbye.

Leo

The Fire Horse gallops directly into your relationships, mirroring your own fiery nature. This creates a dynamic, passionate, and potentially volatile atmosphere in your one-on-one connections, partners in work or life. If you are single, a new partner could arrive with the speed and brilliance of a lightning strike. If you are attached, your relationship must evolve or face the flames.

The status quo is the enemy here; you need a partner who can run alongside you without trying to tame you. The lesson is to find the balance between autonomy and union. This is a year of defining who stands beside you as you build your empire.

Virgo

The fire horse takes you back to your own lands and asks you to focus on what you already know: work, service, diet, health, and routine. You are asked to tame the horse and domesticate it so that it can be used for the betterment of humanity. You are asked to burn away inefficiency, bad habits, and clutter.

The Fire Horse energy is high-octane, so if you don’t manage your energy input and output, burnout is a real risk. Prioritize “fuel” that sustains you: nutrition, sleep, and movement. In your work life, you are becoming a master of the forge. Your colleagues will look to you for solutions, but be careful not to take on the entire village’s workload.

Libra

The Fire Horse leads you to joy, turning your life into a canvas of creative expression. This is one of the most fertile periods for you artistically and romantically. The energy demands that you stop weighing the options and start following your heart’s impulse.

Whether it is a creative project, a new romance, connecting to your hobbies, inner child, or kids in general, the approach should be bold and playful. This vibrancy also attracts admirers. Your charisma is at an all-time high, making this a “Golden Mane” year for you. However, the challenge is to ensure you aren’t just performing for others.

Scorpio

The fire horse brings you back home, to your core and foundations of your life. The New Moon activates your domestic sector, signaling a time of renovation, relocation, or deep ancestral healing. The “hearth” becomes the most important place in your world. You may feel a sudden urge to change your living situation to align with your internal growth or to resolve lingering family conflicts.

The Fire Horse creates a sense of urgency to establish a base that is both safe and dynamic. This is also about emotional security. You are burning away childhood conditioning that told you who you “should” be. Create a sanctuary that can contain your intensity.

Sagittarius

Your words have the power to ignite revolutions this year. The Fire Horse gallops through your sector of communication, making your mind sharper and your tongue quicker. This is an incredible year for writing, podcasting, teaching, or any form of sales. You are the messenger bringing the sparks of new ideas to your local community.

Short trips and busy daily movement will characterize your schedule; you are the connector, weaving between different groups with ease. However, fire can also scorch. Be mindful of speaking too hastily or being overly blunt. Use the power of the Fire Horse to champion causes and spread optimism, but remember to listen to the crackling of the fire as much as you speak.

Capricorn

The focus shifts to the resources you need to sustain your climb. The New Moon activates your financial sector, urging you to be aggressive and strategic with your income and investing in your talents. The Fire Horse is not about hoarding pennies; it is about generating wealth through bold moves and confident investments.

You may find new income streams opening up, or you may finally decide to ask for the compensation you truly deserve. At its core, this transit is about self-worth. You are redefining what you value. The Fire Horse asks you to burn away scarcity mindsets. Trust in your ability to generate resources.

Aquarios

This is your personal sunrise. The New Moon in your sign marks the beginning of a total reinvention. The Fire Horse energy harmonizes with your futuristic nature, giving you the courage to shed old skins and step fully into your authenticity. You are the trendsetter, the rebel, and the visionary.

How you present yourself to the world—your look, your title, your presence—is due for a radical update. You are not just watching the fire; you are the flame. With this power comes the responsibility of leadership. People will be drawn to your warmth and your light. Use this year to prioritize your personal goals above all else. It is not selfish; it is necessary. Gallop toward the horizon you alone can see.

Pisces

The Fire Horse illuminates hidden aspects of your life, galloping into your subconscious, imagination, and past lifetimes, the very things your sign rules. You are being taken into your Wonderland, where everything is possible. The fire stallion casts light into your spiritual side, dreams, and helps you create the closure you need in order to begin a new cycle.

You are processing the past 12 years, clearing karmic debris and emotional baggage. It is a time of solitude and “behind the scenes” work, where your intuition will be blazing like a beacon in the fog. The paradox here is that your greatest growth happens when you are still. You are preparing for a massive rebirth next year!
